Greetings. Been quite a while since I’ve shown my face around here, eh? I’ve been busy and/or neglectful, so apologies to anyone waiting with baited breath for my posts (yes, both of you).
I suppose the biggest news of the moment is that I got engaged! My sweetheart and I aim to wed this coming winter–in a secular ceremony, of course. I’m pretty excited about it. As for other things, I’m still slogging away in grad school. But the finale is in sight! I should be out by the end of the year, possibly sooner. Beyond this, I’ve been playing a lot of video games. I won’t lie: Diablo 3 might have contributed to my recent hiatus. Might have.
Let me take a moment to share some of the articles I’d like to write in the coming months. As you might surmise, between wedding planning, work, grad school, personal projects, and defeating the Lords of Hell, I’ve got a lot going on, so no promises. But here’s what I’d like to do:
Atheism 101 continued – I’d like to write another post detailing the basics of atheism. Not sure what exactly it’d be about yet, but I feel that my first post didn’t quite cover everything.
Faith, Or… (part two) - The second piece in my short series on faith.
Let’s Talk About Privilege (part two of three) - The followup to my first post on this topic. In the second part, I’ll discuss Christian privilege. What is Christian privilege? How does it affect us? Why do atheists and those of other faiths get so riled up about it?
Let’s Talk About Privilege (part three of three) - I’ll talk about how we can fight oppression and answer some other common questions on the subject.
Atheist Perspective: ? – I like writing Atheist Perspective posts, in which I break down some popular piece of fiction, cinema, or whathaveyou, and analyze it through atheist eyes. I did this for the movie Hugo and that post remains one of my most popular. So I’d like to do this again with something topical. Not sure what yet.
Will these posts see the light of day? Who knows! But they’re on my extensive To Do list.
What do you want to see? What topics would you like me to cover? Let me know in the comments.
Today’s post was inspired, in part, by this piece by Ebonmuse.
This Sunday is arguably the most important holiday of the year for Christians. Easter–regardless of its origins, which may or may not be pagan–is the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus. After his crucifixion on Friday (which, for some reason, is now given the moniker good), Jesus Christ… well, did one of a wide variety of possible things, depending on which Christian you ask.
What I was told was that he descended into Hell so he could pardon all the righteous Jews who’d died before his birth, then remained in the land of the dead for “three days” (although I can’t quite figure out how the time between Friday and Sunday could be three days rather than the expected two), and then came back to life and went wandering around Jerusalem, startling his friends and generally being rather impressed with himself.
Wow! Pretty awesome. Read more…
Happy International Women’s Day! Today is a day to celebrate and raise awareness of women and the challenges they face. The world is not always a friendly place for women. IWD is about trying to change that. So I bring you a post on the topic of sexism.
Seeing as this is a blog about atheism and religion, I think it’s fitting that I make a few comments on ways the big monotheistic religions constrain women. I’ll be speaking in generalizations as usual, so your mileage may vary. I know plenty of very progressive religious people who want nothing more than to promote gender equality. But the religions themselves are based on sacred texts and long-standing traditions, and there are plenty of people out there who follow these tenets dutifully. After the cut, I’ll briefly explore some of the ways that sexism reveals itself in Islam, Judaism, and Christianity.
